The Trouble With Kibble

The Trouble With Kibble

Avoid Kibble

Why Do We Live So Unnaturally?

We understand why so many pet owners choose to feed their pets pre-processed dog food.  It's convenient.  It's easy.  It's fast.  A lot of people simply do not have the time to prepare fresh food even for themselves much less for their pets, so they turn to pre-packaged food as an alternative.

But almost all pre-packaged food, be it for people or pets, suffers from the same problem.  By definition it is highly processed.  The more health-conscious among us might say even say over-processed.  While this makes for wonderful profits in the industrial food sector, the result is not that healthy for us or our pets.  Your mother was right, you cannot exist on junk food because it isn't really food.

Too Many Chemicals

Most pre-processed food is bursting with fat, sugar and salt.  This makes it delicious but it also somewhat difficult to digest and metabolize.  It also shifts the food artificially away from the natural chemical profile of real food.

Canned is Too Wet

If the food is wet (canned) water has likely been added to increase volume and weight without adding any nutritional or health benefits.  This is because of the way canned food is measured and sold.  Water is much cheaper than meat by the gram.

Kibble is Too Artificial

You may not know this.  Kibble might pose a health risk to your pet because it is so artificial and distant from the natural sources of nutrients and proteins that our pets evolved on.  Everyone knows that pre-packaged pet food is highly processed.  What some don't know is that they are full of strange and artificial ingredients that animals would seldom encounter or eat willingly in the wild.  This makes kibble difficult to easily digest, a property of food called bioavailability.  Kibble can have low bioavailability, and giving it to your pet can place an unnecessary burden on their digestive system as it works extra hard to produce the enzymes needed to unlock the nutrition.  It puts a strain on their entire system, including such vital organs as their pancreas and gall bladder.

You Need To Do This If You Give Your Pet Kibble

If you feed your pet kibble, you absolutely need to:

  • Provide them with ample amounts of clean, fresh water to help them compensate for eating something that dry.
  • Rotate the food as often as you can, which means switching between different brands of pet food so your pets can avoid any deficiencies that may exist in any particular brand of pet food.
  • Buy smaller bags of pet food, as bigger bags take longer to consume and the fat (which is often sprayed on) can quickly go rancid once it has been exposed to air.

What Feeding Kibble Does To Your Pet

Most pre-packaged pet food is highly processed.  This means that the food can be a bit difficult for your pet to digest and utilize because it is very far from the form that food took for them in their hundreds of millions of years of evolution.  The fact that kibble is so unnaturally dry forces your pet to drink an unusual amount of water, which can place an additional burden on their kidneys.  Because the food is so far away from what they have evolved with, your pet's digestive system will have to work extra hard to release sufficient enzymes to break down the food and unlock the nutrition, placing a strain on the pancreas and gall bladder.
